Primitivo is one of the most important typical variety of the Apulian territory.

In the district of Manduria (TA) it is provided in the specification by the DOP Primitivo di Manduria and the recent DOCG Primitivo di Manduria Dolce Naturale. The name contains its main characteristic: the precocity of ripening of the grapes. It is similar to the Californian Zinfandel and its homeland is still unknown, although according to some it would be identified with Illiria.

The vine is of medium vigor, with medium and inconstant production.
